How to Use the @ Symbol in Facebook

Facebook continues to attract more people from around the world. Individuals, solo entrepreneurs and business organisations have established their presence on this popular social networking site to connect with like-minded people and gain more friends and clients.

Communicating with friends and followers on Facebook can be done in a number of ways. You can post on your own wall or your friend’s wall, write comments on their posts and photos or send a private message. The latest trend to converse with others is by using the @ symbol.

You may be familiar with this @ symbol especially if you’re a frequent Twitter user. Facebook has also allowed users to take advantage of this symbol when making their status updates.

What this @ symbol does is make a personal name or business page name a clickable link. For instance, you want to include a friend’s name or a business page you like in your status update. To make the name an actual link, you just need to add the @ symbol before the name. It’s the same as what you type when you’re replying to a Twitter post.

So if you’d like to share with your friends interesting information you found on Savvy Web Women, as an example, you type @Savvy Web Women and then the rest of your sentence on your wall.

Instantly, the name preceded by the @ symbol will be made into a link and people who would like to find out what you’re talking about need only to click on the name to go to the Savvy Web Women Facebook page. It’s very convenient because people no longer have to type the business name on the search box above to go to that particular page.

When you type the @ symbol on your wall and start typing letters, a drop down menu will appear to let you select the appropriate name you’d like to include in your status update. But once you share your post, the symbol will no longer appear, just the name you’ve chosen, in a blue color. When the name is blue, it means it has become a link which people can click through and land on that person’s personal page or business page in Facebook.

Not only that, using the @ symbol will place your post on the wall of the person or business page you have included. This is a great way of getting in front of a new bunch of eyeballs who may be interested in your product or service.

As well as appearing on their wall, people or businesses you’ve tagged in your status update will also receive notifications.
Businesses can take advantage of this Facebook feature in order to expand their reach online. This is an effective and convenient promotion tool that you can incorporate into your online strategy.
