How to Ban a Fan on Your Facebook Fan Page

Being a social media site, Facebook provides users with the ability to connect with friends, relatives, colleagues and business partners.

It has been so successful in connecting people near and far that it is now the top social networking site preferred by individuals and business owners.

Not all users of Faceboook, however, have learnt the right networking etiquette, or net-iquette as I like to call it.

Some people can be down right rude with their comments or just plain inappropriate.

Fortunately, if you don’t wish to deal with these kind of people on Facebook, you don’t have to.

Facebook allows users to remove negative comments from their wall posts (see our recent blog post on how to remove a spam post here), remove people from their list or ban them permanently without the concerned individual knowing it.

The process of banning or deleting a person from a Facebook page is different from removing someone from your friends’ list.

How to Ban a Fan on Facebook

For those who own or administer a business or fan page, the steps are fast and simple.

First go to your page and look for the Insights section below your profile photo.

It is located below Friend Activity.

When you click on Insights, three categories will show up below it. These are the Likes, Reach and Talking about this.

Choose Likes and you will be directed to a new page showing the demographics and location of the people who like your page.

On the top right corner in line with the People Who Like Your Page title, you will find a See Likes link in blue.

Click on it and you will be provided with a box containing the list of people who have liked your page.

To remove a fan, just click on the X to the right of the Make Admin button.

A small box will show up asking you to confirm your action.

To ban a fan, below the confirmation question, there’s a small box that you can tick to ban the person permanently from your Facebook page.

If you just wish to remove someone without banning them, don’t tick this box. Tick the box only if you wish to ban a fan.

Once you’ve done that, click Okay to confirm the removal of that particular individual.

How to Check Who is Banned on Your Facebook Page

As an admin, you can also check the people banned from your page.

Just click on the See Likes link again to show the people who like your page.

On the top left hand, click the arrow on the box that says People to display the drop down menu.

Then choose Banned from the list to see the fans no longer allowed to comment on and view your page.

So there you have it. If after you have deleted an offending post on your wall or comment on your post and the person continues to write unpleasant comments or behave inappropriately, your best option is to ban him or her from your page.

How to Close a LinkedIn Account

Many media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn allow you to open more than one personal account.

What can happen is that you end up with more than one profile online and that means twice the work to keep it current!

But more than that, it can be confusing for your connections and other people who might not know which is the right person to contact.

I’ve run into more than a few clients that have somehow managed to open multiple LinkedIn accounts and have no idea how they did it or how to close the extra ones.

If you’re in the same boat, maybe it’s time to consolidate and close the other account and focus on just one account to highlight your expertise and other business offerings.

Maintaining just a single account will also make you easily searchable and eliminate confusion among people who find you online.

A normal reaction of people coming across two or more of your names on a social networking site would be one of doubt – they won’t know which is the right one and you run the risk that they will postpone connecting with you right then and there unless they can confirm the right account you’re currently using.

On LinkedIn, it is easy to close an account particularly if you have registered twice in the past.

Remember to tell your existing connections on LinkedIn

You have to choose which account you will retain and make sure you tell your connections in the account you are about to close about your decision to close it.

This way, they will know where to look for you. Or you can send an invite from the account you’ll be maintaining before you close the other one.

Note that when you close an account, you will no longer have access to your connections and other information you’ve added there. As such, make sure you copy and paste all information from the account you’ll be closing to the one you’re keeping to complete your profile.

How to Close a LinkedIn Account

To close an account, first you need to find the settings button on the profile page.

Click on that arrow beside your name on the top right corner next to Add Connections.

The Settings will appear as the first item on the drop down menu.

When a new page appears, search for Account on the bottom left below Groups, Companies & Applications.

Click on it and the page will be updated to show the appropriate link where you can close your account.

Look for the Close your account link under the Helpful Links and Upgrade your account.

Click on Close your account and you will then be directed to a page where you need to specify your reason for doing so.

There are four reasons already stated which you can choose from but if you have reasons other than those, you can tick Other and type your own reason for closing the account.

Once you’re done, click the Continue button to confirm your action of removing the account.

Voila! Now you’re sorted and can better maintain your connections on LinkedIn by using just the single profile.

How to Upload Your Profile Photo on LinkedIn

A completed profile on social networking sites will attract more people to your page or online profile.

If you’re in business and your goal is to increase traffic and gain more clients, then ensuring that your personal information is complete on the various social media sites is a must.

A personal profile is not complete without a photo. This is your personal identification to let other users know that you’re a real person. And we’re not talking about cute shots with fido or tiddles. You need to add a real photo – of you!

How to Load Your Profile Photo on LinkedIn

On LinkedIn, users have the ability to upload a photo on their profile page. Being a professional social network, using a photo is an absolute must have or people will wonder what you are hiding.

It’s fast and easy to upload your personal photo once you’ve started creating your LinkedIn account.

On your profile page, there’s a box on the left side for the picture. Click Edit Photo below the box.

A new page will appear where you can upload your preferred file.

Click Browse to search for the photo on your computer and then hit Upload Photo when done.

Your photo will now show on the left hand side.

If you don’t want to change this, just click the Save Settings button.

If you want to change your photo, however, you can click Delete Photo below your profile picture.

A small box will then appear asking you to confirm your action.

Click the Confirm button if you’re decided to remove the first photo you’ve uploaded.

To retain the photo, simply click Cancel.

How to Centre Your Face in Your Photo On Your LinkedIn Profile

You also have the option to adjust the photo you have already uploaded to ensure that your face is centered.

Just click Edit Photo and on the window that will appear, drag around and adjust the yellow square.

When done, click Save Photo.

Remember that people love to see photos of people they’re connected with or they want to connect with.

Make sure to upload a picture of you that is engaging and, preferably, one that has been done professionally.

As a business owner, you want to establish your credibility on LinkedIn and one of the most effective ways to achieve this is to show yourself as a friendly and approachable person ready to share valuable knowledge and expertise with other members.

How LinkedIn Uses Your Profile to Advertise & How to Stop Your Profile being Used

Social networking sites continue to be widely used worldwide today and more people are signing up.

Facebook continues to be on top of the list while LinkedIn remains popular among business professionals.

Privacy issues, however, by those using social media sites have always been a concern, particularly on Facebook.

A recent issue related to the use by Facebook of a member’s photo and profile information as part of Facebook advertisements. Such use is often without the knowledge of the user, as it depends on their security settings. By using the image of a person in an advertisement, that person can unknowingly be seen to be providing an endorsement for a product or service.

Unknown to many, LinkedIn has the same issue.

Sometime in June this year, LinkedIn made changes to its privacy policy. The amendment allows LinkedIn to use its members’ names and photos in third-party ads that will be displayed on the social network site.

This provision in the privacy policy states that when members recommend people and services, follow companies and take other actions, their name and photo may show up in ads displayed to them as well as to other members.

LinkedIn refers to this as providing social context to enable members to learn about products and services that LinkedIn is connect with.

How to Change Your LinkedIn Security Settings

Those not amenable to the provision, however, can always opt out. You can turn off the feature through the settings section.

You can find the settings tab on your LinkedIn home page.

Click on your name at the top right corner and a drop down menu will appear with two options. Choose the settings.

When you’re on the settings page, look for Account (below Groups, Companies and Applications) at the lower left part and click on it.

The box next to it will then show several options with Privacy Controls on the top left part.

Click the first option – Manage Social Advertising.

A new small box will appear showing you information on how LinkedIn uses a member’s name and photo in its social ads.

To opt out, just uncheck the box that says LinkedIn may use my name and photo in social advertising. Then click the Save button to confirm.

LinkedIn has actually responded to concerns expressed by users about this social ad issue and has already made changes.

In August, a network official announced the new look for company social ads which no longer uses the images of specific LinkedIn members but rather uses a simple message showing the number of people in your network connected to the product or service concerned.

So make sure to check your LinkedIn settings and make the necessary changes if you don’t want to have anything to do with the products and services that LinkedIn is connected to.

What are Circles on Google+ and How Do You Create Them?

On Google Plus, the newest social networking site powered by the world’s famous search engine Google, your connections are referred to as Circles.

You use this feature to control the people you want to share updates with and the posts you want to see.

This allows, what Google calls, sharing the right stuff with the right people just like what happens in real life.

To get the most out of using Google Plus, it’s essential that you create your circles. Otherwise, it will be a lonely experience for you!

Right after signing up on Google +, you will be immediately encouraged to add people to your network or, in Google speak, your circles.

People may be recommended for you such as your existing connections on Gmail. Others can be added by allowing the site to connect with your Yahoo and Hotmail accounts.

Apart from the people you know personally, you can also add popular figures to your circles.

To add a person to your circle, simply click and hold on their picture and then drag it onto your circle.

These can be celebrities, public figures and other leaders in various fields. A separate page will be displayed to you where you can select the categories from where to find famous people you can add to your circles.

By adding them, you will be able to keep track of their updates whether in text or photos on your Google + stream.

Organising Your Google Plus Circles

Users have the ability to organize their circles to ensure that the right information is shared with specific people only and not with every one of your connections.

Organizing circles is easy!

Just drag and drop the people you’ve added or or those who’ve added you, to the appropriate circle.

How To Create a New Google Plus Circle

When you first join Google Plus there are some standard circle categories available to you to start with: friends, family, acquaintances and following or the people you are following.

However, you can easily create new circles and name them according to what suits you.

Just use the blank circle on the left and click the Create circle link.

The latest update on circles is that a use can now share circles. This means that anybody on Google + can now share interesting groups of people with one another.

Sharing relevant information and connecting with the right people are what Google Plus encourages its users to do.

While it’s still in beta form and only a few months old, this new social networking site is already showing a great potential of becoming another place where people can hang out anytime and anywhere they want.

How to Join a Group on LinkedIn

Groups are powerful.

Belonging to a group is a basic human desire. It is a person’s way of connecting with people who share the same interests and experiences.

From a business perspective, being part of a group is a great way to get involved with like minded people but it’s also a key way to get in touch with your target market to find out what they want and what their pain points are.

On many popular social media sites today, it is possible to join groups. Facebook has groups. LinkedIn has groups. Each operates slightly differently.

LinkedIn, for instance, allows users to create groups and join groups to give and provide support mainly in the context of business. It’s a forum where members of a group can share what they know with the other members of the community plus also get their own questions answered.

LinkedIn users have varied choices in terms of joining groups. Groups on LinkedIn tend to be composed of professionals, business owners and top executives.

There are many groups already in existence on LinkedIn and you are free to choose to join several groups that fit your field of expertise and those in line with your interests.

How to Join a Group on LinkedIn

To become a member of a group, first go to Groups on the topmost bar of your LinkedIn profile page. It’s the fourth item from the left.

A dropdown menu will then appear and you can choose to go directly to Groups You May Like or Groups Directory.

To find groups that match your area of expertise, you can go to Groups You May Like. These are already recommended for you.

But if you’d like to join other groups outside of your main area of interest, you can go to Groups Directory.

Here, you will find lists of groups in mixed categories from alumni groups, non-profit organizations, special interest groups and business groups.

When you have decided on a particular group, just click the Join Group button.

You will immediately be brought to the page and get a confirmation that you have successfully become a member of the group.

For some groups, however, you will have to wait for an approval from the manager before being accepted as a member.

What happens when you are member of a LinkedIn Group?

Moving forward, you will receive notifications in your inbox when there are new discussion topics within the group.

As a member, you can join in the discussions by commenting or sharing information that might help other members.

LinkedIn users also have the capability of following influential people in their groups. They can browse previews of the latest comments in a discussion, find interesting topics and view the people who liked and commented on a discussion.

Who can see discussions in a Group?

Note that membership and discussions on LinkedIn are strictly confined within the group.

Non-members cannot see the activities that take place among members unless they join a group.

How to Adjust Your Group Notification Settings

With regards to discussion, activities and announcements, you can also easily adjust your settings.

Choose the email address you’d like to use when receiving notifications and decide if you want to receive an email for each new group discussion, a digest of activities in the group, announcements from the group manager or email from the other members.

Save your settings when done.

It pays to be part of a group on social media sites.

It not only boosts your credibility but it also helps with connecting with those online.

Google Plus – 5 key strategies to get you started

Google Plus is the newest social networking site to hit the web. So how can you utilize it to your advantage?

Powered by Google, Google Plus was launched last June and promises to be a user friendly platform that will allow people to share information and images in real time.

Targeted Sharing – what is it?

The main focus of Google + is targeted sharing.

This means, users can share within subsets of their social group or what is known as Circles.

Through this circles feature, people can classify members of their group such as friends, family, classmates or co-workers.

Using Circles

By using circles, a user can control the kind of information he or she shares with specific subsets within the group.

As people in one’s group are classified according to categories, you can post content targeted only to certain circles.

So your business information and updates can be shared with business partners and clients whilst sharing of funny stories can be just between you and your friends and family.

Resharing

Similar to Twitter’s retweeting and Facebook’s reposting features, users can also reshare information posted by other people which they find interesting.

Again, you can target specific categories of people you’re connected with on Google Plus depending on the kind of information you wish to reshare.

How to Upload Your Profile Photo on Facebook

If you’re in business, you should be using social media sites such as Facebook to be seen and heard.

With over 700 million members on Facebook and rapidly growing, it is clear that people utilize Facebook as one of their key places to connect and share information.

One of the most popular activities in this top social media site is uploading photos. Facebook loves photos and will show photos that you load onto your profile in the newsfeed of your friends in preference to ordinary posts with no image.

Loading a photo is done in various ways such as on albums, on the walls and on profile photos.

The profile picture is essential. This is what identifies you as the person on Facebook.

Users are free to change their profile photo as often as they choose. What matters is you upload a clear picture of you smiling towards the camera that impacts positively on people that see you on the site.

How to Load Your Facebook Profile Photograph

It’s fast and easy to upload a profile picture on Facebook.

Go to your profile page and click Edit Profile with the pencil icon.

This is the last part of the profile information on top of the page just above the series of small photos displayed there.

You will then be directed to the Edit Profile page.

Now click Profile Picture on the top left column below Basic Information.

On the next page, click browse and search for the photo you want to upload from your computer.

When you’ve chosen your photo, click the Save Settings button below.

How to Remove your Profile Photo on Facebook

If you want to change the picture, click Remove Picture below the photo and browse again from your files stored in the computer.

How to Select Your Profile Photo Thumbnail on Facebook

You can also adjust the thumbnail image that is shown on your Newsfeed page.

To do this, click Edit Thumbnail below the photo. On the page you will be directed to, drag the cross icon on the image on the left to set it to how you want your thumbnail photo to appear.

Why Authorship Markup is now a Key Google Ranking Strategy

Google has begun implementing changes to its algorithm that will affect all business owners with websites and blogs, particularly those relying on online advertising for their revenues.

In the first quarter of this year, Google, the world’s leading search engine, moved to a focus on websites offering high quality content as a gauge for indexing websites.

This resulted in major changes to the search results it showed, effectively eliminating the so-called “content farms” from the top page rankings. The sites most affected were those that collect content from other sources just to gain web traffic rather than those sites offering original, quality content.

When it comes to ranking on a Google search, the result placement of your website for a keyword search is key. In Google search engine results placement, the top spot normally elicits 20 to 30 percent of the clicks on that page. Those occupying the second and third spot attract some five to ten percent of the clicks.

Why did Google change their algorithm?

With the recent algorithm change, Google now focuses on high quality content that covers research, in-depth reports and analysis.

The search engine company pointed out that their goal is to provide the best experiences to web users and this benefits not only consumers but publishers committed to providing quality content as well.

In mid-June, another algorithm change was carried out by Google, one that specifically benefits sites that write original content rather than those that only copied or what they call “scraped” content from the original site. The update was Panda 2.2 that targeted scraper sites including blog scrapers.

Why Authorship Markup is now a key ranking strategy

Moving forward, Google really want people who write web content to start using authorship markup.

What this does is tell Google that the content you write is associated with you. The content you write will show a picture of you in the search results and link through to your Google Profile. By doing so, you can really stand out in search results.

Google has since announced that you can now set up authorship for search results by verifying your email address with your Google profile. Authorship markup is further explained in this video released by Google earlier this year.

By utilising authorship markup in your website and content that you share, Google will give you credit as the author and, as a result, your website will rank more highly on Google.

How can you benefit from the Google algorithm changes?

If your website has been adversely impacted by the change or you are still in the process of improving your search engine rankings, there’s still time to take action to improve your website ranking.

Firstly, re-evaluate your website and decide what content should be changed or added. Quality content is key. Ensure that the information you’re providing on your site is not only original but very useful to consumers as well.

A good way to start is by checking your analytics data to sort out the problems. Areas where you can check are the date when your traffic dropped, the sources of your traffic including your entire channels and organic Google searches and the categories used to search for your site as well as the pages that showed a decline in traffic. From there, you can do some evaluation and comparison to determine the patterns and traffic loss.

Google’s advice to publishers and business owners to enhance their traffic on the web is to continue working on providing original content, research and authoritative information that are valuable to users.

How to Set Your Profile Photo Thumbnail on Facebook

One of the great features of Facebook is photo sharing.

Many Facebook users have been taking advantage of this to share pictures of themselves or with friends, family, colleagues and business partners as well as other images they find interesting and valuable.

But other than uploading photos on albums and on walls, Facebook users also have the ability to post their profile photos and change them when they want to.

The profile picture is very important as it shows your unique identity and shows to other people that you’re a real person. Statistics show that people will trust a picture of a person over a company logo or other types of pictures (such as cars, scenery, etc).

On Facebook, profile photos are shown differently. It is usually larger on a person’s profile page and smaller on the news feed page.

So a half body shot on the profile page will show only the upper body section on the news feed. The image that you see in the news feed is known as the thumbnail image.

You may not be happy with the way your photo is shown as a thumbnail. It could be that your face or body is not centered or your head is cut in half (or off!).

The good news is that you can adjust your thumbnail image according to what suits you best. This can be easily done in just a few steps.

How to Set Your Photo Thumbnail on Facebook

On your profile page, click Edit Profile or the one with the pencil icon on top. This is shown above the five photos on top of the profile page and at the last part of your profile information.

When you’re on the Edit Profile page, click Profile Picture on the top left column below Basic Information.

You will next be directed to your profile photo. This is where you can change your personal photo by uploading a new one from your computer and also where you can edit your thumbnail.

Below your picture, you will see the Edit thumbnail link. This is the one you need to click to adjust how your thumbnail image is displayed.

The next page you will be shown is where you can edit your thumbnail photo.

Drag the cross icon on your picture to adjust it to show the area that you would like to display on your news feed.

Don’t forget to click the Save Settings button afterwards.

And that’s it. Those are the simple steps you can take to adjust your thumbnail photo.
